4-Part Gardening Series: Practical, Seasonal Instruction

This four-part series supports both beginner and expert gardeners alike through designing your garden space in early spring, managing pests and diseases in the summer, and maintaining healthy, fertile soil throughout the year. Each class can be taken individually or as part of the series

Garden Planning and Design - Saturday, March 17th 9 - 11:30am

This class is an opportunity for new and experienced gardeners alike to explore garden design for their home and vegetable gardens. We will cover everything from square-foot vegetable gardening, and basic permaculture design, to generating your own home garden landscape design and planting ideas. We will touch on environmental considerations, drainage, seed selection, incorporating pollinators and practical design techniques to help you create a successful and productive food or flower garden.

Cost: $40 plus additional $5 Materials Fee

Gardening 101: An Introduction to Gardening- Offered on both Saturday, March 31st from 9 - 11:30am AND Thursday, April 5th 6 - 8:30pm

We'll dive into the details surrounding garden preparation, planting and garden care. Topics include successfully starting seeds and transplants, understanding soil structure & health, and learning how to create a fertile, organic garden. We will also discuss hot compost, vermicompost, and compost tea. We will include demos both inside and outside (weather permitting).

Summer Garden Management - Saturday, April 21st 9 -11:30am

This class will take place where the first class left off, by exploring best practices for maintaining a healthy garden once it is growing. We will cover a variety of techniques that reduce weed pressure, such as solarization and cover cropping, and will also teach you how to set up an irrigation system and conserve water in the garden. Lastly, we will take a look at some of the tools you can use to make these tasks more efficient. We will include demos both inside and outside (weather permitting).

Pests & Diseases in Your Garden - Saturday, June 16th, 9 - 11:30 am

In this class we will explore methods for managing pest and disease pressure in your garden. Topics include: prevention, identification, basic insect biology, organic treatment options and how to create balanced and healthy garden ecosystems. In the second half of class we will tour our organic farm and examine real world examples.
