One of Boulder’s kick offs to summer is finally here – albeit a little later than is tradition. Crews finally were able to open Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park.
The road usually opens Memorial Day weekend. But crews say this the most snow they’ve seen this this late in the season in 30 years.
Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved road in the United States. It climbs to 12,183 feet and connecting the towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake. Crews closed it last year on Oct. 29, 2010.
Crews were hoping for and got a June opening.
In 1943, it opened on June 26 – making that the latest time ever. Over the past two decades, the June 4, 1994.
